WORKSHOP II – Fee $65
Taking and Making Great Photographs
(Adobe Photoshop for Beginner and Intermediate Users)
by Lisa and Tom Cuchara, MNECs
Held in Campus Center 163 (Lower Level)
Join the Cucharas for
a workshop designed to help you improve your SOOC (straight out of the camera)
images AND your post-processing Photoshop skills. They will teach popular
editing tools designed to optimize your photographs and walk you through working
with layers containing pixels versus adjustment layers. Layers and
masks will be used to teach the use of selective levels, Hue/Saturation,
selective color, shadow/highlight, color balance, selective sharpening, etc. You
will be given an assignment to complete before the workshop which involves
taking photographs using assorted camera settings (shutter speed, depth of
field, etc.) and creating a variety of compositions of landscapes, people,
sunsets, etc. The images taken by workshop attendees will be sent to Lisa,
critiqued (maker’s name will not be shown) and discussed in the workshop with
regards to things that could have been done IN the camera to improve the image
and also how to optimize the image using Photoshop’s editing tools. Attendees
should provide their own laptop pre-loaded with Adobe Photoshop (preferably CS4
or CS5). This workshop assumes that you have basic computer skills and know how
to navigate around your computer, how to open and save files, minimize, etc.
Lisa
and Tom Cuchara, MNECs (CT)
are passionate about photography, both behind the lens and in the digital
darkroom. They love to photograph nature but find capturing the essence of
people just as intriguing. From birds and flowers to brides and babies, they
appreciate the world around them and embrace the challenge of interpreting what
their eyes see and their hearts feel via the camera lens. Tom and Lisa, who own
a photography studio in Hamden, CT, are both very active in many local,
national, and international photographic organizations and have been
photographing weddings, babies, parties, and portraits professionally for over
fifteen years. Their portrait philosophy is based on “We do not remember days,
we remember Moments”. They have had many successful gallery exhibitions and
their photographs have appeared in Adirondack Life, Wild Bird, Birder’s World,
in various calendars, and on the cover of the Wolf Conservation Calendar.

Digital Infrared
Photography - Vega Buchbinder (MA)
Have you ever wondered how the “ghostly” or “surreal”
infrared images were created? Why
are the tree leaves white? Why does the grass look like snow? Is it magic? This
seminar will show you what infrared photography, especially digital infrared
photography, is all about. There will be a mini slide program, set to music, of
infrared images so you can see what IR images look like. Then the presentation
“Digital Infrared Photography” will tell you what infrared photography is all
about, what equipment you need to do it, what subjects and conditions are
conducive to great infrared images, and how to process your images afterwards.
At the end of the seminar you will have an understanding of the “magic”
of IR, and if you want to, you too can create great IR images. (B, I, A)
Vega Buchbinder (MA)
is a member of the Greater Lynn Photographic Association.
Her love of infrared photography began
back in the days of infrared film (when Kodak still made High-Speed Infrared
Film HIE), and her darkroom skills needed to process infrared film began in her
days developing neutron radiographs. During her career she has been a health
physicist at the Ford Nuclear Reactor at the University of Michigan, and a
computer systems analyst for several software companies. Today her love of
science and computers has made the transition to digital infrared photography a
natural one.
Off-Camera Flash
- Bob Harrington (CT)

portrait, and stock photographer who also specializes in teaching photography
and off-camera flash privately and in a workshop format.
Bob has presented off-camera flash, or the strobist style of lighting,

Night Photography:
Finding Your Way in the Dark
- Lance Keimig (MA)
Successful night photography presents unique challenges as well as
opportunities. In this presentation, Lance Keimig introduces us to the exciting
world of photography after dark. After a brief survey of images from the
luminaries of the field, Lance will discuss and show the different types of
night exposures- urban photography by artificial light, long exposures by
moonlight, stacking images to create long star trails, and light painting, as
presented in his book,
Night Photography- Finding Your Way In The Dark.
Equipment, key camera settings and basic photography procedures will be outlined
in the presentation, and distributed in the handouts. Attendees will leave with
a new sense of possibilities and the technical guidelines for getting started
with Night Photography. (I, A)
Lance Keimig (MA)
has photographed at night for over twenty years, and taught night photography
classes and workshops since 1997. He has been on the faculty of the
New
England School of Photography since 2000, and
leads workshops and photo tours across the US, Scotland, and Ireland. Lance
founded the Mono Lake Photo workshops in 2003 and is also a co-founder of the
Nocturnes Night Photography Workshops in San Francisco. Inspired by the way time
is recorded in photographs and the transformative qualities of long exposures,
Keimig’s photographs are about time as much as light, and the things that the
camera sees that the eyes do not. A member of the Professional Photographers
Association, he is also the curator of “Darkness Darkness” , a traveling and
online exhibit of contemporary Night Photography, and of the Three Columns
Gallery at Harvard University. Keimig’s photographs are widely collected, and
are held by the Boston Athenaeum, The Boston Public Library, The Art Complex
Museum, The Grace Museum, Fidelity Investments, State Street Bank, and many
other corporate and private collections.

Architectural
Photography/Photographing the Interiors and Exteriors of Buildings and Homes
- Sarah Musumeci MNEC (MA)
This presentation on architecture tells the secrets of
photographing the interiors and exteriors of a building or home. The program
covers HDR, and how to shoot for it, best HDR programs for the job; how to light
a room if you don’t want to use HDR; how to avoid keystoning and what to do if
you need to correct it (in Photoshop); best lens and camera selections (you
probably already own); and displays of over 120 photographs from nearby and
other parts of the world. (I)
Sarah Musumeci, MNEC (MA)

Copyrights,
Copywrongs, and Model Releases & Other Legal Issues - Jack Reznicki (NY)
If you are the type that wants to know about
Copyright and model releases but were too scared to ask, then this is the
session for you.
In this “live” version of his popular Copyright Zone column in
Photoshop User Magazine, Jack will be
on hand to clarify the boatload of bad information, myths, factoids, and half
truths about Copyright, model releases, and other photographer issues that are
floating around. This session will both demystify and illuminate many issues in
an easy to understand, plain English manner. What does copyright mean and what
does it mean to me? Do I need a model release? Property release? If I get
permission to photograph a house and it’s later sold, can I still use the photo?
Can the bride and groom sign a release for their guests? This session will
answer these questions and with a Q&A at the end, you can ask your own burning
questions. (B, I) Pixiq

What makes a Fine Art Black and White photograph? It is the
masterful crafting of the image maker to create wonderful full range of black,
white, and gray tones combined with the impact of form and composition of the
subject. Ansel Adams created the zone system to provide a gauge of tone values
but gone are some of the methods that were created by the development process on
film. Digital can provide the same wonderful tones that once were created with
black and white film. In fact we can create and control our tones more than we
ever did before. Janice Wendt, a Master Black and White traditional
printer, applies her art of printing to interpreting and creating wonderful
black and white images using the new Silver Efex Pro 2 by Nik Software. Discover
the steps that can assist you with a wide range of tools including Zone mapping
to achieve a broad range of tones within every image. Discover how to edit

Creating an engaging portrait of a subject can be
challenging, but when working in a subject’s own environment you can tell a
story which you might not achieve in a studio. Kathy will discuss the details of
planning a shoot when typically there’s no time for prior location scouting, the
ability to think on your feet and adapt to the situation as well as how to work
with people to make them comfortable, and how to create flattering lighting
given sometimes difficult
situations. Showing examples of her portraits, Kathy will discuss the details of
how each was accomplished. (B, I, A)
